FOR LIVING Formal and Informal balance can be confusing ideas.
Here are simple ways to tell them apart:
Formal balance is based on a series of triangles. The number three
and the number 1 work well with an informal arrangement. Three items
clustered together create a triangle, and one item set on one side
of a table automatically creates a triangle with the points being
the top of the object, the bottom of the object and the opposite side
of the table.
Formal balance is based on squares or rectangles, and the number
two. Two identical items placed on the same table creates a square
or rectangle. If you only have one item you put it in dead center.
