DESIGN FOR LIVING

When looking at faux finishes on walls it can sometimes be hard to figure out how the effect was achieved. This segment explained it all. We learned from our guest, Sondra Kiss London, how to make your walls resemble a Tuscan villa, stainless steel or polished plaster, using the products she and her husband sell on their website, www.fauxlikeapro.com.

The three-step process was very simple. Start by rolling the tinted plaster product on. It's like thick paint. Once you have the base coat of plaster applied you start applying the second coat with a spatula (not one from the kitchen. They have specially made ones of blue steel available). After applying the second and third coat the wall already starts to take on a smooth texture. The shine is achieved by applying a coat of wax over the plaster, using the spatulas then burnishing the wall by scraping the blade of the spatula across it. This sort of technique is perfect for creating accent walls that people can't help but touch. The nice thing about the product they sell is that it's latex based, so it can simply be painted over if you tire of it!
