PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Privacy in a dorm is a rare commodity. Room dividers are an easy and stylish way to create some private space in a double room. Here's how:

We made a lovely orange vinyl room divider using a few simple supplies.

You'll need:

-A sheet of vinyl that coordinates with your dˇcor, we used orange transparent vinyl, but you can use an opaque kind for more privacy.
-Two curtain rods
-Masking tape
-A sewing machine
-Thread to match the vinyl
-Rope or chain to hang your divider
-Hooks to hang it from

Measure the height of your ceilings and cut your vinyl so it is at least a foot shorter then your ceiling height plus 8" (for the rod pockets). Make sure the piece is cut on the square. Fold the top down 4" and the bottom up 4" and tape them in place using the masking tape. Stitch the hems in place (being careful not to catch the tape in the stitching) and then remove the tape. Next, insert your rods in the rod pockets and your divider is ready to hang. Be sure it's well mounted on the ceiling by securing the hooks into studs, not just drywall. You can make this divider with fabric as well. Just use pins instead of tape and turn under the raw edges for a clean finish.

We created several other dividers to apportion space:

Use tension rods to hold a piece of fabric in place on which can be mounted pictures.

Suspend broomsticks from chain on hooks to create a linear curtain. They can be painted to coordinate with your space or left in their natural state.
