DESIGN
FOR LIVING If you're decorating scheme just isn't working out try a few of these fixes: The concept of an accent wall is based on contrast. In our room the two walls are painted similarly bright colors. We gave some interest - and some contrast - to the green wall by applying blue paint to it using a roller that has rubber bands around it (Fig. 1). The result is a wallpaper like effect that adds interest to the wall and is a fraction of the cost of wall paper. Picture placement is key to creating a pleasing effect. The anemic poster on the wall by the window was too small for the space it was in. We replaced it with two paintings found in thrift shops that draw your attention much more. The difference between furniture placement and unpacking is use of space. The original arrangement in the room was unfocused. By moving the chair into the corner and twinning it with the small table and lamp and creating another grouping with the other chair and a few other modern pieces we create zones in the room. These zones have obvious cohesion and purpose. Look at your furniture and decide what looks best together, then place it in groupings that relate to each other and the space around it. Purchased curtains can often times be the wrong length. These are both too long and too short. Curtains should either end at the floor or in the vicinity of the windowsill. We attached an accent fabric to the bottom of our curtains and applied some trim to the seam and top hem. This simple touch made the drapes a feature of the room, rather then an afterthought. Alternatively, the drapes could have been shortened to the bottom of the windowsill.
