3 Questions for Brini Maxwell
Now in its second season on the Style Network, the hilariously deadpan
Brini Maxwell Show flaunts a retro-modern style (think Dame Edna meets
Mrs. Cleaver). Brini Maxwell’s Guide to Gracious Living: Tips,
Tricks, Recipes and Ideas to Make Your Life Bloom hits the bookstores
this month, so we asked Brini for his, uh, her take on holiday entertaining.
What does entertaining say about a person?
Your style of entertaining is your calling card. Are you boeuf bourguignon
or beer nuts? Champagne cocktails or Jell-O shots? I like exploring
the grace and charm of mid-century entertaining – it’s
a cross between formality and informality, with communal dishes like
fondue, elegant but easy clothes, and furnishings that allow one to
sit on the floor.
You are a fan of 1950’s-era Jell-O molds. How do you get people
to eat them today?
M&M’s seem to entice people to eat anything. Perhaps they
could do the same for Jell-O molds.
It’s the Thanksgiving of your dreams. Who’s invited, what’s
on the table and – more importantly – what are you wearing?
I would be enthralled to host a Thanksgiving for remarkable historical
American figures – Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington,
Betsy Ross, and Abraham Lincoln – to discuss the evolution of
our country. I would serve the traditional meal and host it in a colonial
great room, such as we created on the show this season. I would wear
a patchwork dirndl dress with a laced bodice, lace trim and dove-gray
go-go boots.
