Finding smart new uses for objects others have
tossed aside is the subject for this episode. In our disposable society
we need to find a way to reuse our refuse, here's a start!
ANYWHO My friend Sandy Corshen came by to help me organize all my detritus. She does this as a career, and had some good tips: -Set aside a day to accomplish the task. Sandy says that if you go at it piece meal you'll never get it done. -Don't allow yourself to become distracted by phone calls and other things until you're finished. -If you haven't worn it in a year, you won't miss it if you get rid of it. Sentimental value is really the only reason to hold on to things. Everything is replaceable. -She says remember the acronym SPACE - Sort, Purge, Assign, Containerize, Evaluate. OUT AND ABOUT: The recycling plant We visited the Westchester Materials Recovery Facility where Jim Van Woert showed us what happens to our recycling after it leaves our curb. In addition to finding a few choice items to augment my collection it was fascinating to see how everything was separated out, chopped up, broken down and bound up for eventual reuse. All the belts, chutes and bins were very confusing, but what it taught me is how vital our recycling programs are to the management of our solid waste - so don't pitch it, recycle it! HELP ME BRINI! What do you do with those gifts that just aren't you? Re-gifting is a perfectly acceptable practice as long as you observe a few rules Don't make the mistake of giving the gift back to the original giver - you'll wish the earth could swallow you up. Rewrap the gift, and make sure the box doesn't look like it's been rewrapped.
Random Thoughts The dainties you saw hanging on the umbrella frame drying rack weren't mine, they were my producer, Julie's. She was very popular on the set with all the techies after that segment. The dog you saw me pull out of the cabinet in the "Design For Living" segment is Shorty. She belongs to Julia Van Vliet, who was an invaluable member of the art department and made almost all of the custom textiles and soft crafts on the show. You can see Shorty in the Cocktail Party episode being held by Karen Rabinowitz at the end of the show. |
