Games are a wonderful way to bring people together. Whether it's cards, board games or party games, entertaining with games as a theme is one of the easiest ways to keep your guests smiling!
Incidental Treasures: What would a game party be without gaming accessories? We featured some darling items on the show that are fun collectibles today, as well as a few new items that look like they came from way back when. Among them: a bridge set - 4 plates with matching cups that are perfect for the light fare served at bridge parties, card party ashtrays - a small set of ashtrays that came in 4 different colors on a darling little stand, a poker chip dispenser - perfect for anteing up and a battery operated card shuffler - just what's called for when it's time to deal the cards. Among the new items, tumblers and plates with billiard and card motifs and a checker set with a glass board and shot glass men. The item that takes the cake, however was the Hip Flip - a fun 60's game that had randy suburbanites cutting loose and swinging their hips. The object of the game is to make the tab hanging from a bar that's suspended between two bellies flip over using only your hips. It takes quite a bit of dexterity. Our assistant director Josh helped me demonstrate! Out and About I dropped by the gaming club, Board Stiff to see how these people take game playing to a whole new level. Dale Sorenson was nice enough to show me the ropes and we played a number of games that night. They have a very welcoming membership. Each table had players and a teacher for the people unfamiliar with the rules. Most of the games were new games on the market, which made the evening unpredictable. Among them were games from the Cheapass Game Company, which is all about the game, not the merchandising. What they sell is mostly the intellectual property. They assume you have the markers, dice and money, what you get is the cards, game board and rules for specific games. It's an economic way to explore new and different games without breaking the bank, so to speak. The folks at Bored Stiff were so nice that I felt right at home and played several different games at a few tables before I said goodnight. Thanks guys! Random Thoughts The guests at the card party at the end of the episode are, of course our own Jennifer Cohan, the phone guy was Louis Guerra and the person on the left was my mother, Mary Jane Wells. She was instrumental in creating the cable access show that started all this madness and it was nice to have her join us on the set for this episode. |
